Nostradamus, the enigmatic figure renowned for his cryptic prophecies, has been associated with various pivotal moments in history. From the death of King Henry II of France to the September 11 terror attacks, enthusiasts have sought to decipher his verses, attempting to unveil a supposed foresight into significant historical occurrences. Let's explore these purported predictions in-depth, analyzing their connections to momentous events throughout history.
Michel de Notredame |
Michel de Notredame, more commonly known as Nostradamus, was a 16th-century French astrologer, physician, apothecary, and reputed seer who famously published more than 900 prophecies written in poetic quatrains. These were collected in a book titled Les Prophéties in 1555, with each set of 100 prophecies being referred to as a “Century.”
While Nostradamus’ predictions may be poetic in nature, and therefore, up for interpretation, historians have found that some of these predictions appeared to have come true.
To this day, some believe that Nostradamus truly did predict future events — ones that he could have had no knowledge of — while others say that his prophecies are too vague to have any real meaning.
Was Nostradamus really a seer capable of predicting the future? Or, was he taking shots in the dark and happened to manage a few lucky hits? Decide for yourself after reading these nine shockingly accurate Nostradamus predictions.
The Death of King Henry II of France
Nostradamus' quatrains have been intertwined with the tragic demise of King Henry II of France in 1559. Among his verses lies an eerie passage: "The young lion will overcome the older one, On the field of combat in a single battle; He will pierce his eyes through a golden cage, Two wounds made one, then he dies a cruel death." This verse has been correlated with the fatal jousting match between Henry II and Gabriel Montgomery. Montgomery's lion-emblazoned lance accidentally struck the king's visor, resulting in injuries that led to Henry II's death. The uncanny resemblance between this event and Nostradamus' prophecy has long intrigued scholars and enthusiasts, sparking debates about his alleged clairvoyance.
What did Nostradamus have to say about the whole affair?
“The young lion will overcome the older one,
On the field of combat in a single battle;
He will pierce his eyes through a golden cage,
Two wounds made one, then he dies a cruel death.”
The Great Fire of London in 1666
The catastrophic Great Fire of London in 1666 has been retroactively linked to Nostradamus' prophecies, albeit through interpretations clouded in ambiguity. Despite the absence of explicit references in his quatrains, enthusiasts point to verses like "The blood of the just will be demanded of London, Burnt by fire in the year 66" as a potential allusion to this devastating conflagration. However, skepticism persists due to the challenge of reconciling vague predictions with specific historical events.
Over 100 years before the Great Fire of London, Nostradamus had, possibly, foretold the event:
“The blood of the just will be lacking in London,
Burnt up in the fire of ’66:
The ancient Lady will topple from her high place,
Many of the same sect will be killed.”
The French Revolution and the Rise of Napoleon
Interpreters have scrutinized Nostradamus' verses for clues regarding the turmoil of the French Revolution and the emergence of Napoleon Bonaparte. Enigmatic passages such as "From the enslaved populace, songs, Chants and demands, while princes and lords are held captive in prisons," have been inferred as depicting the revolutionary chaos and the rise of a powerful leader akin to Napoleon. The parallels drawn between these prophecies and historical events continue to fascinate those intrigued by Nostradamus' alleged foresight.
But more than two centuries before the French Revolution took place, Nostradamus wrote:
“Songs, chants, and demands will come from the enslaved
Held captive by the nobility in their prisons
At a later date, brainless idiots
Will take these as divine utterances.”
The Discoveries of Louis Pasteur
While some have sought connections between Nostradamus' writings and scientific advancements, particularly the discoveries of Louis Pasteur, concrete correlations remain elusive. Pasteur's groundbreaking contributions to germ theory, pasteurization, and vaccination revolutionized medicine. However, attempts to directly link Nostradamus' prophecies to Pasteur's achievements lack substantial evidence, leaving these connections largely speculative.
He also happens to be one of the select few people apparently mentioned by name in Nostradamus’ prophecies:
“The lost thing is discovered, hidden for many centuries.
Pasteur will be celebrated almost as a God-like figure.
This is when the moon completes her great cycle,
But by other rumors he shall be dishonored.”
The Rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party
The rise of Adolf Hitler and the cataclysmic events of World War II have prompted enthusiasts to search Nostradamus' quatrains for any hints of prediction. Some interpretations suggest vague references to a dominant leader and global conflict, loosely aligning with Hitler's ascent and the horrors perpetrated by the Nazi regime. Yet, the inherent ambiguity of Nostradamus' writings presents challenges in definitively establishing connections to specific historical occurrences.
There are, in fact, two Nostradamus predictions that have been linked to Hitler’s rise. Here is the first:
“From the depths of the West of Europe,
A young child will be born of poor people,
He who by his tongue will seduce a great troop;
His fame will increase towards the realm of the East.”
Hitler was indeed born to poor parents in 1889 in Western Europe. He was also known for his ability to sway people with words, which allowed him to gain immeasurable power and establish the Third Reich. Furthermore, as a part of the Axis powers, Hitler’s Germany formed an alliance with Japan, a “realm of the East.”
But this was not Nostradamus’ only alleged prediction regarding Hitler. The second goes:
“Beasts ferocious with hunger will cross the rivers,
The greater part of the battlefield will be against Hister.
Into a cage of iron will the great one be drawn,
When the child of Germany observes nothing.”
The Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Efforts have been made to link Nostradamus' prophecies to the unprecedented devastation caused by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, the absence of explicit references and the abstract nature of his verses pose obstacles in conclusively tying these catastrophic events to his predictions, leaving these connections in the realm of speculation.
And once again, Nostradamus may have seen it coming:
“The heavenly dart will stretch its course
Death in the speaking: a great achievement
The proud nation brought low by the stone in the tree
Rumours of a monstrous human, bring purge, then expiation.”
The Assassination of John F. Kennedy
In more contemporary history, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 has attracted scrutiny regarding any potential ties to Nostradamus' prophecies. Despite attempts to align specific quatrains with this tragic event, such interpretations remain speculative and lack empirical evidence, underscoring the challenges of linking Nostradamus' writings to singular historical occurrences.
Some of these theories also make reference to one of Nostradamus’ predictions:
“The ancient task will be completed
From on high, evil will fall on the great man
A dead innocent will be accused of the deed
The guilty one will remain in the mist.”
The September 11 Terror Attacks
The haunting events of September 11, 2001, renewed interest in exploring Nostradamus' prophecies for glimpses into modern-day tragedies. Enthusiasts sought parallels between his cryptic verses and the events of 9/11. Yet, establishing definitive links between Nostradamus' predictions and these specific terrorist attacks remains elusive and subject to debate among scholars and historians.
And hundreds of years earlier, Nostradamus wrote:
“The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.
Fire approaches the great new city.
By fire, he will destroy their city,
A cold and cruel heart, blood will pour.
Mercy to none.”
Nostradamus' prophetic verses continue to captivate individuals across generations. Their ambiguous nature allows for a multitude of interpretations, sparking ongoing fascination and debate regarding their relevance to historical events. While intriguing and seemingly prescient in hindsight, attributing specific occurrences to Nostradamus' predictions remains a subjective endeavor, inviting diverse perspectives and perpetuating the allure of prophecy and historical foresight.
